Greater is He that is in You than he that is in the World
Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world (1 Jn. 4:4 KJV)
Believing in our strength over our adversaries is the first step toward victory. Courageously battling the enemy becomes virtually impossible if we doubt our capabilities or identity. The Apostle John reassures us that the one residing within us far surpasses the one in the world.
This verse is captivating, revealing three crucial truths:
Firstly, as God’s children, we host a divine presence; there is Someone in us. This presence is none other than God Himself, living within us through His Holy Spirit. Here is John’s point: God’s children and Christianity are animated by the Spirit of God.
Secondly, there is a contrasting spirit in the world. The ‘world’ here is depicted in opposition to God’s children. In 1 John 4: 1-4, John discusses the subject of false prophets, who are part of the ungodly system that seeks to undermine Christ’s interests. However, on a larger scale, this includes the ungodly system and the people who are antagonistic toward Christ. John emphasizes that just as a divine Spirit is animating God’s children and fostering godliness, an opposing spirit is fueling ungodliness and hatred against Christ. This spirit isn’t a mere tendency but a personal entity, just as the Holy Spirit is God Himself within us. And this spirit in the world is Satan, the prince and god of this world (John 12:31, 2 Corinthians 4:4).
Thirdly, John reassures us of our victory, emphasizing that the One within us is greater than the one in the world. Knowing and believing this fact gives us the confidence to overcome the world fearlessly.
Meditate
Reflect again on the concept that a spirit animates the world system.
Apply the Word
Remember, what you carry within is mightier than what fuels the world’s evil. Acknowledging and believing in who you are and what you carry are paramount to assuring your victory.
Pray
Express gratitude to the Father dwelling within us for giving us the strength to overcome the world.
