A Time to Reflect and Give Thanks

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven (Eccl. 3:1 KJV).

Solomon, the wise king of Israel, tells us there is a season for everything, and a time to every purpose under heaven. There is a time for the year to start and a time for the year to end. Furthermore, each season has specific things or purposes attached to it!

The end of every year is a unique recurrent season of life to reflect and give thanks, amongst other things. Through reflection and consideration, we tap into the wisdom of our past. The past 12 months of this year—a textbook of your life—detail your strengths, successes, weaknesses, failures. Wisdom mandates us to read this textbook, capitalize on our strengths, avoid our mistakes and avail ourselves of opportunities we might have missed.

Besides detailing our works, the textbook of our lives also chronicles what God has done for us. A crucial spiritual activity for us as children of God is learning to remember what God has done and expressing our gratitude and appreciation for it. Do not forget what God has done, and when you remember, do not keep quiet about it. We must never make the fatal spiritual mistake of withholding thanksgiving for the “little things” God has done because “He did not do the big thing” we were expecting. Thank God for the little things to make way for the big ones!

Please meditate on Eccl. 3:1 above. Think about those powerful words and mutter them.

I encourage you to open the textbook of your life for the months of this year now behind you. Do not be too focused on next year and end up repeating the same mistakes, dealing with the same devils, or failing to maintain the victories you got because you ignored the past. Besides, do not fail to recognize the hand of God this year in little or big matters.

Ask the Spirit to help you analyze the textbook of your life for the year that is now behind us.
