I Adjure Thee by the Living God

But Jesus held his peace. And the high priest answered and said unto him, I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us whether thou be the Christ, the Son of God (Matthew 26:63, KJV).

When the high priest Caiaphas questioned Jesus at his trial, Jesus initially remained silent. It was only when Caiaphas invoked the name of the living God that Jesus replied. This episode highlights the immense power in God’s Name and teaches us how to harness the power in the name of Jesus given to us.

Although aware of the high priest’s weaknesses and flaws, Jesus still responded to his position of authority under the old covenant. When Caiaphas said, “I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us whether thou be the Christ,” Jesus answered, affirming, “You have said it.”

Names and titles hold power. In the Old Testament, God revealed Himself to Israel as Jehovah (or Yahweh). Today, He has revealed His name as Jesus, filled with immense authority and power. While the Old Testament names of God hold deep meaning, it is crucial to recognize that today, no name holds divine authority other than Jesus.

We cannot confront demons using the name of Jehovah or Yahweh—they hold no authority. If Caiaphas were alive today and invoked the name of the living God, it would not hold power. Only the name of Jesus can save, redeem, and deliver humanity. Demons will not tremble if we call the name Yahweh, but they are terrified when a child of God calls the Name Jesus in faith and power.

While the high priest could invoke the name of the living God, we today can command mountains and demons to move, not in God’s Old Testament names, but in the powerful name of Jesus—before which every knee bows.

Meditate

What does the name Jesus mean? (Matthew 1:21).

Apply the Word

Exercise your right to use the name of Jesus. Command life’s challenges and spiritual forces of darkness to move in His Name.

Pray

Thank God for granting us the authority to use the powerful name of Jesus.
