That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God. (1 Corinthians 2:5 KJV)
Our faith is always in something or someone. Faith is not an independent virtue that we can have in or of ourselves. Paul admonishes the Corinthians above and said their faith should not stand in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.
The Corinthian Church was a special local Church within a community saturated by Greek Philosophy. In the context of 1 Corinthians 2, Paul had been speaking to them about the wisdom of men in contrast to the wisdom of God. In summary, the wisdom of men has to do with human ideas, methods or concepts specifically as it relates to God and our relationship with him in this context.
The Greek word translated “stand” in the verse above is the verb “to be”. Paul was telling them their faith should not be, rest upon or stand in the wisdom of men. If we believe because the speaker was eloquent while speaking to us empty human ideas, that “faith” will not produce any divine results. Faith has to be in the power of God which operates in truth. The Church and our christian lives stand on Truth. We must be careful to ensure we believe the truth, not crafty human words, empty philosophies or ideas or even emotional teachings. Disappointments will result when our faith rests on anything else but the power of God.
How can someone’s faith stand in the wisdom of men? Can we obtain the results promised in scripture if we believe a doctrine which is not the Truth?
APPLY THE WORD
Satan is after what we believe with all of his might for a good reason. If he corrupts and pollutes the Truth, he erodes the foundation and the entire building will crumble. Your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.
Ask the Spirit to expose any areas in your life where your faith is standing on something else other than the power of God.
