Who can understand his errors? Cleanse thou me from secret faults (Psalm 19:12, KJV)
David had a clear understanding of one of important human weaknesses which is blindness to our mistakes and errors. There are different types of errors we can make. The first and most obvious are the errors we know are errors. However, this is not what David is speaking about in the verse above. His concern is those errors which we commit and we do not know that we are making an error. In other words, we are wrong but we do not know it. In fact, on the contrary, we might even be very sure we are correct. We are, therefore, blind to our mistakes in this respect.
David asked “who can understand his errors,” and he continues to petition God to cleanse him from secret, unconscious, unintentional faults. Do you know that there are some errors we are probably making right now and we have no clue that we are wrong? These are going to be one of the most dangerous errors we can ever make because it will destroy our life slowly for a long time, and before we come to our senses, it is probably too late.
Let me give you a quick and handy example. Scripture says the fool has said in his heart that there is no God. Some people reject Christ today. They are wrong, but they do not know it. They are very sure they are correct; otherwise they would have changed. Sadly, some will realize they are wrong only after death when all hope is gone.
The same is true about our finances, relationships, Christian lives, etc. You might not know it now, but you are probably making some errors in some areas in your life, and you truly do not know it. Think about a young man so thrilled and excited to marry but the woman is the wrong wife for him. He is excited, but is in error without realizing it. What about that brother or sister who is about to invest in a business and does not know that the business will fail. He or she is very positive about it and their heart is waiting to be broken. The list continues.
How do I deliver myself from my error? Well, the truth is we cannot deliver ourselves from this kind of error. Why? Because we are sure we are correct! Even if someone tries to counsel us, we will probably throw the advice behind our back because we are sure we are correct! This is the danger of this kind of error. The only way God delivers us from this error is to illuminate our hearts with His light. David was asking God to help him deal with these “secret errors”. Have you ever been so convinced about something and all of a sudden the thing looks so stupid to you and you wonder what on earth you were thinking? That means you “came to your senses!”. God’s light in our hearts will do this. The light is the Word. This is exactly why feeding on the Word is so important. It sheds light on your path. It opens your eyes where they were closed. You read and things become clearer to you. May the Lord deliver you from yourself, and cause you to “come to your senses” in any area in your life that is causing you pain because of something you are doing wrong but have no clue about it!
Do you realize you can be making a mistake in an area in your life and you are completely unaware of it?
APPLY THE WORD
Your only hope of escaping from your own errors is for God to shine His light in your heart. It should be your prayer that His light will enlighten your path and keep you from stumbling.
Ask the Father to deliver you from every error which you are convinced is right, whereas it is slowly destroying your life.
