Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost (Titus 3:5, KJV)
The Apostle Paul reveals to us two critical processes that accompany our born again experience —the washing of regeneration and the renewing of the Holy Spirit. The first step is washing, and the second is the spiritual transformation to make anew.
Imaging you can create a new phone from the one that has been smashed by your car. You first take that old phone that is probably muddy and filthy and wash it thoroughly to remove every dirt. Once it is clean, you probably heat the material to convert it to liquid and mold it into a new Phone! This is certainly not how it works but I want you to focus on the process. That process of thoroughly washing it and then making it new is what the born again experience is all about. God takes a sinner, and gives that sinner a bath of a lifetime, washing him or her from every filth of sin. Once clean, He completely destroys the old life and creates a completely brand new life in that same individual! If anyone is in Christ, he or she is a completely new creature!
These two processes, washing and renewal( or making new) are at the core of the meaning of baptism in general. If only the Lord could open our eyes to see what happens to a sinner when they receive Christ. We are so thoroughly washed that it is indeed the bath of a lifetime. Our sins and filth are washed away. God had to clean us to His standard. The reason is that except we are thoroughly washed and made holy, He cannot come and dwell in our hearts. Some of you reading this might be hesitant in accepting this truth because you cannot imagine God washing you this thoroughly. This is the proof for you—the very fact that God lives in your heart means your spirit has been thoroughly cleaned; otherwise God cannot live there! Yes, the blood of Christ is the antidote to the sin of humanity. Praise the Lord for the Lamb of God!
Would God dwell in your spirit if it is not perfectly washed?
APPLY THE WORD
Do you trust the Lamb of God? Do you trust His blood? Do you still carry the feeling and sense of being “unclean” even though He is telling you that there has been a washing of regeneration through His blood? Your spirit is perfect. You do not “feel” your spirit. You believe the Word and then see it! Your soul now has to walk in that reality as you believe what He has already done. Ye are washed! Ye are sanctified by the Spirit of our Lord! ( 1 Cor. 6:11). Trust your Saviour’s blood!
Bless the Lord for shedding His blood that we made receive the new birth through the Spirit.
