He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful (Matthew 13:22, KJV)
Jesus taught us a remarkable principle of the operation of the Kingdom in the parable of the sower in which He shows us how different people respond to the Word of God and therefore have different results in their lives. He uses the picture of a farmer who plants seeds in his farm. The seeds he was throwing on the ground fell on four types of soils, with each type representing the types of hearts that we have. One of the four types of hearts that received the Word is shown in our scripture above—a heart that is like a piece of land with many sharp thorns.
When the seeds fell on the land with thorns, they quickly grew but the thorns choked the plants and they could not bear any fruit. He says this represents people who hear the Word of God, got really excited about it, but the care of this world choke the Word. What are the care of this world? In brief, they represent the normal things that we do daily. The main issue with these care is that they are usually NOT sinful things. They are things you MUST do to as part of our normal lives here on earth, such as take care of your family, go to work, etc. They are not SIN but can kill God’s Word in your life when your concern for them takes precedence of your concern for God’s Word. These cares are a silent killer because we typically divide things in our minds into “sinful and non-sinful” and try to stay away from the sinful. The truth is that many non-sinful things can pierce our lives like thorns. Do not allow the care of this life stifle God’s Word in your life.
What is your own “care of this world” that threatens your Christian life or God’s calling on your life the most? I have mine too!
APPLY THE WORD
We cannot run away from our earthly responsibilities. God is not asking you to do that either. He wants you to put Him first!
Ask the Lord to help keep you from the thorns in your daily life on earth.
