Quench not the Spirit. (1 Thess. 5:19 KJV)
This was a simple but profound instruction to the Thessalonians believers. It was not an instruction to unbelievers. This verse is as valid today, and even more so than it was to the Thessalonians. If the Holy Spirit is quenched, Christianity will cease to exist and we will be left with empty religion full of rites, regulations, practices, and of course its emptiness and frustrations.
The 20th verse of the chapter above gives us a specific illustration of what it means to quench the Spirit. It says “Despise not prophesying”. Prophecy is a manifestation of the Holy Spirit. When we despise, reject, deny, not recognize or refuse to cooperate with the manifestation of the Spirit, we are actually quenching the Holy Spirit. We will be blocking His manifestation in the Church and in our lives in so doing. Spiritual manifestations are easily abused and misused. And we should not make the error of completely rejecting or denying the Holy Spirit’s manifestations because they have been misused by someone or worst still because we “do not like” how He chooses to work in our lives.
It is sad how many churches or believers have silenced the Holy Spirit without even realizing it. You cannot live the Christian life or serve God without the Holy Spirit’s ability. Attempting to do so can be likened to trying to drive a car with the engine turned off. Unfortunately, many believers in this state still continue to try harder and even start pushing the car with the engine turned off to get it going! If you are trying too hard or struggling with Christianity, you are likely doing it by your own ability. Let God live in you through His Spirit. Learn to accept the Person and Work of the Holy Spirit in your life. Open your heart to learn more about Him, and believe in His working in your life you will be up for a glorious Christian life.
The Word in your mind and mouth (1 Tim 4:15; Josh 1: 8)
Let your mind ponder deeply on the instruction above. What does that mean to you? Any areas of your life you might have unintentionally, or even intentionally, quenched the Spirit? Declare out loud that you are living by the power of the Spirit every day.
Water the Seed (word) to grow. Invite the Spirit’s strength! (Isa 32:15; Zach 4:6)
Developing a working intimate relationship with the Spirit of God will be the best thing that can ever happen to you as a Christian. Ask Jesus to open your heart to know more about His Spirit. Pray that the Lord will teach you how to walk with His Spirit.
APPLY THE WORD TODAY!
Your door to a blessed life today is doing God’s Word. Refuse to be a hearer or reader only! (James 1:22-26)
Intentionally keep an open eye to recognize the Holy Spirit in your life today. If you recognize His finger, you will be able to recognize His hand! Be Holy Spirit conscious today and relate to Him as God living inside you!
