Of His Fullness have All We Received

And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace (John 1:16, KJV)

We have received of the fullness of Christ, grace for grace. It means Christ has furnished in abundance to us, taking from the fullness in Him and pouring it upon us to the full. That implies what we have in  Christ  is from what He was full of. It immediately begs the question “what then was Christ full of?”

First, it tells us in the same verse above that the fullness we have received is grace. It is grace being added to grace until it overflows and then more grace is added to the overflow again and again!  The 14th verse of the same chapter tells us that Christ is  “full of grace and truth”. The expression “grace and truth” is used in the Old Testament to describe the very character of God. When God wanted to reveal Himself to Moses  as an answer to Moses prayer, He said :

“And the LORD passed by before him, and proclaimed, The LORD, The LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth” (Exodus 34:6, KJV)

Christ was full of the fullness of God. The Apostle Paul describes this same truth to us in vivid terms:

“For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.” (Colossians 2:9, KJV)

The fullness that was in Christ was the fullness of God. And it is from His fullness that we have received. Paul explains this mystery in the very next verse  moving from Christ having the fullness to us, the believers in Christ:

“and you have been filled in him.” (Colossians 2:10, ESV).

This is the explanation of John 1:16 above. Christ was filled with all the fullness of God and we in Him, have received of that fullness! Hallelujah!

MEDITATE

Why is this fullness called “grace”? (Hint: think of an unimaginable blessing and unworthy people!)

APPLY THE WORD

Be conscious of this reality. What filled Christ is now filling you. Let this revelation sink in your heart and start living from that reality.

PRAY

Thank the Lord for His wonderful grace bestowed upon us.
