What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid. (Rom. 6:15 KJV)
We are not under the law in Christ Jesus. This is the blessing of grace. This truth is one of the most misunderstood and also the most abused of all the realities revealed to us about grace. Time and space will not allow us to get into the details of this in this devotional, but it suffices to say Jesus has redeemed us from the burden of having to obey God’s laws to become righteous. For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes. (Rom. 10:4 NAS). The mystery of grace is that a man believes what Jesus did on the cross and He is instantly made righteous by God.
Not being under the law is not the same as lawlessness. The scripture gives us an example of lawlessness in Judges 17:6 “In those days there was no king in Israel; every man did what was right in his own eyes”. There was no right or wrong, sinful or righteous act. Everyone did what was right in their eyes. This is lawlessness. Grace is NOT lawlessness. It is rather the perfection of walking by God’s law, which is living by the Word of God through faith.
You are not under the law. Do not try to earn God’s blessing or favor. Also, do not allow lawlessness to creep into your life. Grace is the fulfillment of the law of God! Walk in the Word of God always.
Think about the scriptures above. Have you fully realized that you are not under the law? Is there an area in your life that you are “working really hard” to “earn something” from God? Or is lawlessness rather working in your heart, where you do what you want to do irrespective of what the Word says?
Ask the Lord to keep you from either of these extremes -living under the law or in lawlessness.
Many believers are living under the law without realizing it. Trying to earn your way with God, either to become right by your own doing or trying to earn His blessings or favor by working for it. The best thing you can do NOW to escape the grip of the law is to believe the Word like a child-you have what God says Jesus died to give you, and you are what He says Christ has made you to be. Do not make it complicated. This is faith. Your outward live BECOMES CHANGED when you first receive by believing what God says.Keep your heart tender always with the Word of God. Similarly, watch your heart carefully for the ugly intruder called “lawlessness”.
