For I am not ashamed of the Gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek (Romans 1:16, ESV)
The great Apostle Paul declared to the Romans that he was not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ. He was hoping to visit this congregation in Room and preach to them the message about the living Christ. He gives them the reason why he was not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ: it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes.
Shame is a feeling of humiliation which comes on when we know we have done wrong or something foolish. There is nothing wrong or foolish about the Gospel of Christ. Why should we be ashamed of the Gospel in the first place? The enemy wants us to believe that what we are( Christians), the message we carry or what we represent is foolish or wrong. On the contrary, the scripture above tells us something completely different about the Gospel. It says it is the power of God to save those who believe.
I want you to note what it did not say. The scripture above did not say the Gospel releases or contains the power of God. It says it is the power of God, which is a stronger narrative. The Gospel is what God uses to save people. It is His power to save from hell, sinners from the power of sin, families from divorce, those who are enslaved from the power of addiction, possessed from demonic oppression, etc. We have the solution to the crisis of the world. Do not be ashamed of being a Christian. Do not be ashamed of the Gospel. The message you carry in your mouth is the solution to the world’s crisis
What are the reasons why Christians sometimes feel ashamed of the Gospel?
