God working in you to will and do His good pleasure

For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure (Philippians 2:13 KJV)

Christ the Power of God, and the Wisdom of God showing a man with light in the forest

Paul gives us a life-changing revelation of the workings of God in our lives in the verse above. He had told the Philippians to work out their own salvation with fear and trembling( verse 12), emphasizing the importance of what they had to do. They had to work out themselves whatever God had already worked into them. Almost as if contradicting himself, he adds that though he is asking them to work out their salvation, it is really God who is working in them to desire to do it and giving them the power to do so.

This is the mystery of the Gospel, Christ in you ( Col. 1:26-27). In Ephesians 3:20, Paul said God is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we can ask or imagine. He goes further to tell us how He does that: “according to the power that worketh in us”. This is the same thing He is telling the Philippians here that God works IN them to will and do His good pleasure.

How does God’s power work in us? First, you must immediately remove every charismatic or pentecostal tradition that has equated God’s power to miracles or gifts of the Spirit. Miracles are only ONE of many manifestations of the power of God in and through us. As a matter of fact, the major manifestation of God’s power in your life on a daily basis will not be miracles.

Please take a look at the verse above again and see how God works powerfully in us. He makes us willing to do His will and gives us the strength and ability to do it. For example,  He will work powerfully in our hearts to make us desire to lead  a holy life, and then gives us the strength to say no to sin. Similarly, He will also work in our hearts to be able to love the unlovable or overcome fear and anxiety in our lives. It might appear as though it is us  working  but that desire in our heart and the ability to overcome temptation are not from us  but from the Spirit. It is us living, but not really us  but God! This is the glory of Christianity, Christ in us living His life in us as us!

God has very big plans for you. May He open your eyes to discover the mysteries of Christ in you!

MEDITATE

Please take a moment to ponder upon the verse above in light of the devotional you have just read.

APPLY THE WORD

God is sending out a loud call for the Church to move to maturity. He is working powerfully in His people’s hearts to be willing and able to do His will. Co-operate with the Spirit. Become conscious that Christ is one in you and lives in and through you.

PRAY

Ask the Spirit to help you fully grasp the mysteries of Christ working powerfully in and through you.
