Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered, since the worshipers, having once been cleansed, would no longer have any consciousness of sins (Hebrews 10:2 ESV)
The Old Testament sacrifices for the people’s sins were offered continually because they could not truly take away sins. Our verse above tells us once true cleansing is done, the consciousness of sins is taken away.
The word “consciousness” used above means an awareness of the presence of our sins. It means the self-awareness of our sins, filth or guilt. Sin leaves a stamp on the heart of every human being that remains after the sinful action is completed. This stamp is expressed in different ways, including guilt, fear, sense of uncleanness, shame, etc. The classic example is what happened after Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden.
Atoning for our sins, therefore, required two distinct but related aspects. The first was the God-side, where we needed forgiveness or pardon from God. The second aspect is what had to be done on our side to cleanse the stamp of sins from our hearts. The consciousness of sins has to be cleansed. The blood of Christ has not only secured our pardon by the Father. It has purged or cleansed the consciousness of sins from our hearts. Sin kills, including its consciousness. If, as Christians, we do not allow the blood of Christ to purge the consciousness of sins, we will live a Christian life of condemnation, shame, fear and guilt before God. It is not possible to have a pleasant and enjoyable walk with God and an intimate fellowship with the Spirit with the consciousness of sins.
What is consciousness, as described above? The KJV uses the word “conscience”. What is the relationship between conscience and consciousness? ( Hint: read a Bible Dictionary or Lexicon on this!).
APPLY THE WORD
Faith in the blood of Christ is the human response that expiates sin. Trust in your Savior, and allow His blood to perform that cleansing of the heart continually. And beware of deadening of your consciousness. This happens when we knowingly live in sin but willfully attempt to suppress the guilt and conviction that comes with a sinful walk. Allow His blood cleanse your hearts always, and never allow yourself to kill your conscience by a lifestyle of sin.
Ask the Spirit to help you always trust completely on the cleansing power of the blood of Christ.
