He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit” (Jer. 17:8 ESV)
The Lord compares the life of a man that trust in the LORD and hopes in His Name to that of a tree that is planted by the water. The leaves of the tree remain green, all year round. It is not anxious in the year of drought. Do you know that is God’s idea of your Christian life?
Your life in Christ is destined to be always green and never dry. I never thought this was possible as I grew up as a young Christian. In fact, I knew, from what I heard around me, that Christianity has up days and down days. The sad reality is that an overwhelming majority of believers are living like trees that are withered and struggling to survive in a dry place. This is not God’s design for our life in Christ. We will face troubles and persecutions as Christians. However, these are not the same as being spiritually dry, empty and defeated.
The River that you have been planted by is the Holy Spirit inside of you. You build intimacy with Him in prayer and the Word. I cannot overemphasize this—there are no shortcuts to developing a vibrant and thriving practical relationship with the Lord. If you want to be green all year round, pay the price. The price is not a huge financial seed or a fat tithe. It is your time and sacrifice to sit at His feet feeding on the Word and spending time in prayer.
Considering the place that the Word and prayer have in the practical lives of many believers, should you be surprised that the leaves of the trees of many saints are yellow, withered and even falling off?
APPLY THE WORD
Invest in your relationship with God. There are no shortcuts. Your Apostle, Prophet, Pastor, etc will not be a replacement for your intimacy with the Lord.
Ask the LORD to help you in your devotional life with Him in these time-tight days.
